TCM ACTIONS
Clears Heat and resolves Phlegm, disseminates and sends the Lung Qi downward, alleviates wheezing and coughing.
INDICATIONS
Asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
Productive cough with thick yellow sputum, wheezing, laboured breathing with wheezing, followed by coughing of thick yellow sputum, chest oppression, panting, red tongue with a yellow greasy coat, slippery and/or rapid pulse.
ACTIONS OF THE MAIN HERBS
Ginkgo seed is used orally in formula to treat asthma, bronchitis and chronic obstructive airways disease as well as leukorrhea, cloudy urine and seminal emission. It has been shown to have anticatarrhal and antitussive actions. Prunus (apricot) seed is used orally in formulas to treat coughing and dyspnea. It has been shown to have antitussive and laxative actions.

CAUTIONS
Avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea, guarana and cola containing drinks. Caution for those on anti-coagulant medications (i.e. Heparin, warfarin or aspirin). Caution in patients taking drugs that affect the central nervous system, antihypertensives, antiarrhythmic drugs (e.g. quinidine, procainamide, disopyramide).
