TCM ACTIONS
Nourishes the Kidney (and Liver) Yin, enriches the Kidney Essence, reduces deficiency Fire and drains Damp-Heat.
INDICATIONS
Debility due to chronic illness, tinnitus, diabetes mellitus, urethritis, cystitis, glomerulonephritis, vaginitis, prostatitis, chronic respiratory infection, involuntary seminal emissions, leukorrhoea, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, pyrexia of unknown origin.
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
Flushed face or red cheeks or malar flush, Low grade fever or tidal fever or afternoon fever, Dry mouth and throat, thirst, Low back pain, Night sweating, Hot hands and feet, Dizziness or light headedness, Restlessness, Vexation, Sleep disturbance, Nocturnal seminal emissions (M) or frequent sexual dreams (F), Overactive libido, Dysuria, Vaginal discharge, Red tongue with scanty or peeled coat, Thready and rapid pulse.
ACTIONS OF THE MAIN HERBS
Phellodendron bark is used orally in formulas to treat diarrhoea, dysentery, jaundice, leukorrhea, dysuria, and inflammatory skin disorders. It has been shown to have antibiotic, antiviral, antiinflammatory, cholagogue and hypotensive actions. Anemarrhena rhizome is used orally in formulas to treat cough, febrile illnesses, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and hypertension. It has been shown to have antibiotic, antipyretic, adrenal tonic actions.
DOSAGE & COURSE OF TREATMENT
8 - 12 pills, 3 times daily, half to one hour away from food. In severe cases and in the early stages of treatment (first 2 – 4 weeks) the dosage may be increased by 50 - 100%. Course of treatment: 3 – 6 months, or longer in elderly patients (at lower dosage) Safe for long term use.
CAUTIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS
Discontinue during an episode of common cold or influenza.
