Xuan Bi Tang also known as Stephania & Atractylodes Combination
TCM ACTIONS
Clears Damp-Heat, unblocks the Channels and Collaterals to relieve Bi (painful obstruction).
INDICATIONS
Acute arthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, acute infection with general body aches, arthralgia associated with rheumatic fever or systemic lupus erythematosus.
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
Acute arthralgia, Arthritis with swelling, redness and heat, Reduced joint mobility, Fever or alternating chills and fever, Red tongue with a yellow greasy coat, Slippery and wiry pulse that may also be rapid.
ACTIONS OF THE MAIN HERBS
Stephania root is used orally in formulas to treat various arthritic and rheumatic conditions, as well as to treat oedema. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, diuretic, antiallergic, hypotensive and immunosupressant actions. Atractylodes lancea, rhizome (blue atractylodes) is used orally in formulas to treat a variety of disorders of the GIT, skin and joints. It has been shown to have the following actions: hypoglycaemic, anticancer, increases excretion of sodium and potassium.
DOSAGE & COURSE OF TREATMENT
8 - 12 pills, 3 times daily, half to one hour away from food. In severe cases and in the early stages of treatment (first 7 – 10 days) the dosage may be increased by 50 - 100%. Course of treatment: 2 – 4 weeks. Generally for short term use.
CAUTIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS
Avoid foods that may aggravate arthritis (e.g. sugar, caffeine, citrus, salt, red meat, dairy products, additives, soft drinks, white flour, nightshades, white potatoes), smoking, saturated fats and hydrogenated fats. Caution during pregnancy.
